I agree with 6 the dude is just spreading his dads remains his dad probably went there a lot
at least they didnt make you sweep it back up ): that would have been insault to injury D-: fyl
Well if you just lost your dad, you wouldn't suddenly go online to check rules..you wouldn't care..that sucks op
#25, there isnt a national park in Banff...
Edit: I just thought, unless there is another Banff somewhere in Borth America? In which case, my mistake!
Ahah, nah it was never my thing. But if I had, I would've loved to study all about this mythical place :P.
#63 - Uhh, I dunno whether that's a diss or not since I've never seen that movie..sooo yehh :/
I bet a judge would throw that one out. Take it to court! If the cop who issued the ticket doesn't show they'll throw it out for sure!
Green elephants and pink camels? Sounds like those animals are infected. I'd only go if they had Bandersnatches and Jabberwockys.
Evolution by natural selection is a wonderful thing! I also believe Lewis Carrol saw the jabberwockies and bandersnatches in Borth America. Callooh! Callay!
I agree. He must have been on some pretty crazy drugs to write Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, though!
If Lewis Carroll was on drugs, Tim Burton was on all types of all the wall shizz to create the remake of Alice in Wonderland the way he did.
I didn't see it, but I got a good idea of the style from the adverts. The Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts both looked so creepy!
Tikwichka, you seriously need to watch it :]. Helena Bonham Carter is so beautiful, yet they turned her into stout, ugly thing in that movie :/
Raleigh, I'll buy the 3D DVD when it comes out. I don't think it is on at the cinema anymore. Yes, Helena Bonham Carter has a beautiful face, but many of her roles do not show this, especially the Harry Potter films and Tim Burton's films. Did you know she is married to Tim Burton? I read that somewhere, and it made me wonder why he has her looking so horrific in her roles.
Yah, they've been married for awhile. I started to get suspicious when I noticed her in all his films. It's no surprise that he has her looking so horrific in her roles though. I mean, just look at him :P.
Haha! Yes, he is an odd looking man. Has an eccentric appearance that matches his films. I like it, though! So much of Hollywood is about 'perfect' looks and skinny bodies. His look is almost a breath of fresh air (almost!). However, sometimes he can go a bit over-board with his wierdness.
@ #37
I beg to differ. I have just lost my mother, and am now in possession of her cremated remains. She was relatively still quite young to die, her death was sudden and completely unexpected, and I have been emotionally devastated.
However, I am still aware that there are rules and regulations surrounding the handling of human remains, in any form, and for legitimate reasons. I wouldn't just pick any place that was loved by my mother, and spread her ashes without making sure that I had the clearance to do so first. For exactly reasons such as this; you don't want to run into legal problems when you are still in a time of grieving. Besides, there is a lot to take care of as it is when an immediate family member dies, and you can't just sit back and do nothing because of your grief.
Were there no other family members that were involved with, or aware of the spreading of the ashes who might have known better? I am not currently certain of what I ultimately want to do with my mother's ashes, but I do know that other family members will at least be made aware of what happens, and will likely want to be present.
But, as others have said, nothing can be done now, and at least it is still less costly than a traditional burial.
Yes, you have a point. Hollywood is as fake as it gets, so eccentricity does set him apart. No matter how odd it is at times ahaha :].
Have you seen his artwork? His sketches are particularly amusing. Reminds me of Lucian Freud's paintings for some reason.
No I can't say that I have, although now that you've mentioned it I have to google them. Give me an example of one.
Wow, Tikwichka. I just looked at all the art he on his site, and I seriously want to buy that art book of his now :P.
Sorry for your losses, OP and 102. Perhaps the father asked for his ashes to be scattered there? I'll probably catch shit for saying this, but if that was my father's request, I wouldn't give a damn if it was legal. But I *would* do some research beforehand into the laws, so at least I could plan how to do it without getting caught. I'm pretty sure Dad would approve and have a chuckle at his little girl.
Oh, and re: Lewis Carroll, some scholars believe he was actually affected by severe migraines, and any drugs would have only been treatment of such. Certain migraine-related experiences could have inspired his books. For instance, migraines can distort your perception of size to the extreme, which may have inspired the Eat Me/Drink Me growing and shrinking scene.
Then again, some claim he was a pedo. So who knows.
Tikwichca and Raleigh, way to fuck this post in the ass with your retarded conversation. *THUMBS UP*
L2message.
It's spelled 'Tikwichka'. It is right there in front of you. If you did not like the conversation then don't read it.
I don't give a shit if your name ends with ca or ka, you still need to learn to message. More than 20 posts between the two of you and it's not even relevant to the FML, GTFO.
Why waste your time replying to our convo, and thus adding to the off-trackness of this FML then if it annoys you so much? Just doesn't make sense.
I agree with 123... it's kinda shitty of u guys to take up almost a whole page of random discussions.
Take your nastiness elsewhere. You cannot private message on the iPhone app. Conversations irrelevant to the FML are commonplace now, yet I don't see you bitching everytime. And as Raleigh said, you have actually contributed to the conversation and thus brought it back to life. This was clearly your intention, well done! So, Rayleigh, where were we?
Hmm, I believe we were talking about Tim Burton's artwork :]. I looked on the website and saw he's published a book full of his art. I seriously want to go buy that right now :P.
I don't mean to be nasty and it really doesn't bother me that much, I'm just saying. And you're right, it is pretty common for posts to be off topic, but I've never seen a conversation with two people take up an entire page. Whatever you guys want though....
I love. when people put the $ sign after the amount of money.... u deserve it.
OK #135, I probably misunderstood your tone :-)
Ah yes, Tim Burton's artbook. I believe there is an option on the site to buy it (can't remember the price). I like the wee man you guide through the gallery!
A few disclaimers: Frequent lurker here. I spend a lot of time reading comments when my health keeps me in bed. I don't mind reading irrelevant convos, as long as they're intelligent and n0+ wrtn liek dis. I consider this exchange one of the first, so I just jumped in. (I really hate the pages and pages of totally inane irrelevant posts and "OMG #86 is hawt!!!" and stale Russia jokes and certain *ahem* people thinly disguising their bragging and pity parties as "political" conversation and false modesty. Whoa, some hidden disdain surfacing here!) That being said...
Tik, actually you can message on the iPhone. You just have to go to Safari to do it. It might add some extra steps, but it's just a consideration thing-- do you take a few extra minutes to save literally *everyone* else the trouble, or do you do the most convenient thing for you and say fuck everyone else? That's why people get pissy-- it comes off as a big fuck you sometimes, even if you don't intend it that way. I don't get the impression that you do.
But I do have to give Raleigh his due credit. He sticks out here because he seem like a genuinely nice, friendly guy, and his posts are always literate and level-headed. I've noticed him move private conversations to pm's many times, for which I thank you, Raleigh. And I'm happily married, so no stalker :)
Wow. I have literally NO life :)
#164 She said iPhone app and yes I too have no life. I have been reading your conversation the whole time. A bored 11 year old girl can be so easily amused.
Ha Ally, I won't tell you my age, but it's more than twice yours, so I guess I'm more than twice as easily amused ;) But, as I said I'm stuck in bed with health issues so I have an ok excuse despite being able to drive, drink etc. At 11 you already type more coherently and properly than a lot of the people on here, so kudos. And you're right-- she did say app, my bad. But the main idea still stands :)
Wow, I just read your post IJD :]. Don't worry, I'm not a stalker. Also, thank you for recognizing my level-headedness :P.
29 your a fucking asshole, it ovi seemed like a good idea if it's important to that person. your somebody that people forget about when you die. fucktard
As #25 stated, this happened in "Banff National Park". Banff and it's surroundings are considered a national park!
Wow, Captain Overreaction. Way to judge someone's entire worth as a human being by a single comment they make on FML.
135, I've seen a convo take up 4 pages in fml...numbers were exchanged and everything hahaah.
It would be nice though if people didn't carry on conversations over fml that are unrelated to the post, please:) I like reading te comments, but it is EXTREMELY IRRITATING to sift through all that extra stuff...
but I'm sorry OP, that's very sad.
why would anyone say you deserved it? I mean the poor guy just wanted to spread his fathers ashes in a national park where he would have liked to be spread.
Yeah, but uh. Would you be ok if someone spread ashes in your yard without asking? it is someone else's property and they have to regulate that. otherwise everyone would scatter ashes. and $300 is way cheaper than buying a plot in a cemetary.
Death is sad and a part of life but it doesn't exempt anyone from rules.
it's ash and dust. the wind will puck up and blow it away anyways, there's honestly no big deal.
just throwing my opinion out there.
National parks are not someone elses property, they are everyone's property. They are only regulated by the state and federal government to protect the environment. Ashes aren't exactly a pollutant either, they will be gone after the first rain.
I agree, its not like its a body, but I think there were some specific things about it that caused the OP to be fined. like were where they spread? did someone complain? did they spread the ashes near some ppl having a picnic and it freaked them out? think a little bit deeper. it seems extreme because there is a part of the story we dont know.
And no, state and national parks are not owned by the people but regulated by the state lol?? the state owns the park usually as a means to protect land from being bought/built on and they collect money from visitors in order to keep protecting it and to pay rangers.
ahh i have a lot of typos. Im still bad at my iPhone. i missed what you said about it being regulated, my bad for saying what you already said, I actually didn't mean to respond to this thread.
I guess #43 has a point. I was born in south Africa and immediately when I read about the national park, I thought about the Kruger national park, and imagined someone spreading some ashes in the vast plains. I don't think that would deserve a fine, but yeah, if it was around people, or disturbing people, I guess YDI
You're too cute. Look it up sweetheart, parks are our land protected by the goverment. I wouldn't have thought so myself until I became a Biology/Environmental science major and studied environmental law. If the OP didn't have enough common sense to not throw his father's ashes onto someone's picnic table, yes he deserves. Somehow though, I doubt that's the case. National Parks are usually huge. The fact of the matter is it's probably against regualtions no matter the circumstances.
Ok, "honey", as I said, think just a wee bit deeper.
If I own land, I can do as I please on it, as long as it doesn't violate anyone's safety or wellbeing. Ash as a substance is not a biohazard, therefore it can safely be scattered. but In Western culture death is a taboo subject, and there are many people
who do not believe in cremation. I can't say for sure, but I know that it is prohibited in many sectors of Christianity. In Eastern culture, cremation is accepted all around. I'm studying abroad in Japan right now where people wouldn't think twice about cremation -its mostly used because of the lack of space. The OP could have scattered ashes if s/he had received permission in advance. Anyone can tell you that it would be kinda shady to see a guy walking around a park carrying an urn. You say parks are huge, but someone HAD to see the OP and reported it for whatever reason.
I think "ownership" isn't the word you're looking for. If we had any kind of ownership over these parks WE would set the rules and we could scatter whatever biodegradable substance that we please, and the OP wouldn't be fined.
Does $300 seem unnecessary, extreme, and insensitive? Of course. But rules exist for a reason. Death doesn't exempt anyone from rules (unless they are dead ha.) Otherwise everyone would be scattering ashes, and it would even diminish the symbolism behind it.
As I said if the OP got permission I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. As a person with the merits you listed I would've assumed that you would realize that.
You're right- 'ownership' is not the word I'm looking for. In fact, I never used it. That was your word. The reason that you cannot do whatever you want in a national park is that it's not yours alone, it belongs to everyone. On another note, we do set the rules. Indirectly of course, but it's just like anything else government operated. You contribute to what goes on in national parks the same as you do what goes on in D.C., with your vote. I personally would not consider it 'shady' to see someone carrying out their father's last wishes. The fact that death is taboo in our society is irrelevant. I sincerely doubt that there is a law that states one cannot spread the ashes of a loved one in a national park because it's gross or whatever your logic on that was. It would've been because OP was dumping anything there. If he had asked permission, OP most likely would have been rejected. I never listed any merits, only stated that this is the kind of material I am exposed to daily. Like I said, it wasn't *what* he was dumping it's that he was dumping anything at all. I am not sure, it's just a theory so don't quote me on this, but for all we know depending on the way people are cremated (if fossil fules are used) there could be some level of heavy metals such as Pb or maybe sulfur left in the ashes. Meaning it could be considered a pollutant. Anyway, I have completely lost sight of what we are even debating here. My goal was not to get your panties in a wad, so I am finished with this thread. Berate me, insult my intelligence again, do as you please because I'm done ;)
ROFL I wasn't trying to argue, geez. Nor was I insulting your intelligence. I lost sight of what we were debating as well. oh well.
45 I'm there with u I suck at usig the iPhone I should probably return it... :/. and op that sucks don't worry Atleat u get to keep the ticket they give u as a memory of
ur dad and ur last
moment
I hate to break it to you guys, but most national parks are built on Indian burial grounds, which to me seems like a fine place to spread ashes of a loved one..
and your whole 'everyone will do it now?' argument?? wtf! oh ya, sure, one person gets away with it and suddenly there's a rampage of ash spreading mourners. it's NOT as common to cremate as you think.
op was just respecting their fathers wishes.
I know you were grieving and whatnot, but you should have checked regulations before you did it. Sorry OP, YDI.
YDI . I know it's your father and whatever, but it's a national park. They fine you if they see you didn't clean up your dog droppings.
You don't just get pity because it's your dead father you're tossing around. But at least you got it done and maybe you feel accomplished, just pay the 300 dollar fine and don't whine about it.
law is sometimes retarded. all you fuxks that talk about "regulation" would more than likely say different if you were in that situation. retarded about the fine but at least your dad is where he wanted to be.
agreed, your life sucks and im sorry to hear about your pop's but IT WAS a national park and 300 bucks isn't a horrible price to pay for a dope final resting place, am i right?
and if anybody knows dope, it's this guy. op, that sucks. and they probably cleaned up the ashes after u left and threw them in a dumpster....
Thanks. It's a real picture of.. art by Victoria Frances :) I'm not too sure about the media, but if I'm not mistaken it's a painting.
I duno how that even affects them. as long as it didn't get on anyone, they have no reason to b gettin angry over somethn like that. smh
You should've just gotten their permission to do it, and saved $300. Still though, that really sucks, and I'm really sorry you lost your dad, OP.
I'm very sorry about your father, but I'm still going to have to say YDI on this one. If everyone started spreading their family member's ashes in state parks, they wouldn't be pretty places to visit anymore. Hope you learned not to litter now.
that's sad. sorry for your loss...but a national park?? yeah not the best idea...
I honestly don't think that's a chick. What female would seriously name themselves that..?
yeah probably a guy with a bit too much time on his hands, laughing at guys leaving horny comments haha
Yah, I think that most of the females that put pics up are just a setup anyway.
yeah and they don't show faces n their pics always look like different people for some reason...besides they're mainly bored 14 yearold boys haha
And if they aren't showing their faces, they're showing everything..which is unattractive all in itself. This entire site is filled up with nothing but bored 14 y/o boys and girls.
Agreed^^ with both of you! i hope I don't count, i happened to get cut off {>_<}
Nah Babyteef, you're good (: ..There are a couple of noticeable people who aren't though, but I'll just keep those names to myself.
why would you spread them in a park?? aren't you pose to keep them in a vase or something and mount them over the fireplace??
@ 46- STFU. That's what most ppl do. That's why you get someone cremated, so you can keep them with you.
61, that is not always the case. I wouldn't even say it was mostly the case. Some people prefer to be cremated versus buried, then want their ashes spread. My uncle wanted that, and I know my parents want their ashes to be put into fireworks and shot over the ocean. (There's a company that does this.) It's the where OP spread them that's the problem.
agreed. there are many different reasons why someoe would want to be cremated
polluting is polluting - and yes, that IS polluting (why do you think the indian government has had to regulate ashes being thrown in the Ganges?). I'm sorry for your loss, but you still have to follow the rules.
What did you do? Dump the ashes on the gatehouse?
Some day when you have a mistress you can put this little lesson on "why it is good to use discretion" to good use.
didn't know there were certain placed you could & could not spread the ashes of the deceased...learn something new everyday!! but it's ok to spread them over a body of water...hmmmm!!!
well you should have found out if it was alright first...but anyways, 300 bucks is a lot less than a grave plot and headstone would cost, so its not a bad deal
$300 for spreading your father's ashes? It would have cost you a helluva lot more if you got caught in a national park spreading your mother's legs!
Well I don't think you completely deserve it, I clicked YDI because you're an idiot for not going through the proper channels. It is illegal to spread ashes on public land as it is considered the disposal of human remains. You can't dispose of human remains on public land because it can become a contaminant. You can receive permits or permission from the park, but that can be expensive as well.
Remember, there aren't just ashes in the urn. There are still bits of the bone that didn't get pulverized and whatnot.
Ehh, gave you a FYL on this one, but I'm assuming your father wanted his ashes to be spread there. I'll give you the benefit of a doubt. Sorry for your loss OP.
At worst it's unlicensed disposal of human remains, at best it's littering. You were probably just trying to fulfill a father's last wishes, but you should have had a clue that it was against the law. My sympathy still doesn't cancel out the YDI.
Same thing happened to my dad with his dad's ashes, except he spread them on some guy's property and the guy got pretty pissed...
I'm sorry for your loss OP, but you shouldve read the rules before spreading the ashes.
The fine would be for littering and it is against the law to spread ashes in a state or national park. I spread my late wifes ashes in a National park in Colorado 2+ years ago, all you have to do is be careful and pay attention to who is around you. We went with 20 people and it was very emotional, you are in essence releasing the loved one and you will not have a cemetary to go to or cremains remaining. The reason you do it is it is a last request by the loved one.
YDI - you should have got permission first. There is a garden in my city where the roses are starting to die because too many people spread ashes on the ground.
I must say ydi, becuz it is against the rules and u shuld hav known. I do give my condolences though
Wow that really sucks mate but you probably should have got permission first if you didn't. Again I feel sorry you.
small price to pay for doing ur fathers wishes, after all he probably spent more on raising you
ur retarded ur supposed to get a document or permit that says u can do that dumbass ydi
I remember reading an article saying how people aren't allowed to dump ashes in places like that. but yeah that sucks.
Why do people still do that anyway? Spreading ashes in a public place is lacking manners and common sense. It's ridiculous. YDI.
#29. go fuck yourself. dont joke about things like that. their father died. have some respect.
This is very sad :(
It's not ridiculous and this poor guy doesn't deserve this. He's obviously grieving at this point in time, so why would he look up rules and regulations on National Parks? I highly doubt it explicitly states "you are prohibited from scattering ashes" anyway. Some of you need some empathy and to stop being so rude. That park must have held a special significance- his dad probably loved it or visited it often.
You need a permit to scatter ashes, without one you are littering. The ticket wouldn't be thrown out.
How the hell is that funny? You don't deserve it and I don't see how you can get fined for doing that. That's bullshiit. Fight it.
Good.
Your supposed to get a permit to do that. You were basically littering, you deserved that fine.
